Geography and Volcanic Peaks.

The geography of mount Kilimanjaro is dominated by its three main volcanic cones; Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the most recent and highest of the three home to Uhuru Peak and is considered dormant, meaning it is not active right now but could erupt again in the future. It still has the mountain’s iconic ice cap and glaciers, which are sadly shrinking fast due to climate change. Mawenzi at 5149 meters, is rugged and then extinct, lying to the east of Kibo. Shira is the oldest peak, it has largely collapsed to form a beautiful, relatively flat plateau to the west. The area between the two higher peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi, is a high-altitude plain that is known as ‘’ The Saddle.’’ The National Park protects this entire challenging, with deep valleys cutting into the lower slopes, especially on the west and south, and it is a critical source of water for the region.

Five Unique climatic zones.

One of the most extraordinary aspects of the park is its rapid change in the environment as you climb, often described as walking from the equator to the North Pole in a week. The mountain has five distinct ecological or the climatic zones, each with its own specific plant and animal life. The lower slopes have a Cultivation Zone where farming takes place, followed by the humid, dense Montane Forest zone (or Rainforest) where most of the park’s rainfall occurs. Higher up is the Heath and Moorland Zone that is characterized by giant heathers and then unique giant plants like the Dendrosenecio (giant groundsel) and then giant lobelias. Above this lies the cold and arid Alpine Desert Zone, which is mostly bare rock and dust. Finally the summit is the Arctic Zone is a freezing area of rock, ice and permanent glaciers where almost no life can survive.

Wildlife and Vegetation.

While most famous for height, Kilimanjaro National Park also protects a variety of wildlife, although spotting them can be difficult. The densest population of animals is found in the lower Montane Forest zone, where there is cover and plenty of water. Here you might find primates like the beautiful black and white colobus monkeys and Blue monkeys. Larger, but rarely seen, animals include elephant’s cape buffaloes and various species of antelopes like the bushbuck and then different duikers. As you move higher into the moorland, life becomes tougher. Smaller animals like the four-striped grass mouse and various birds like the White necked Raven are more common. The plant life is equally diverse, with the forest holding hundreds of species. The strange looking, tall giant groundsels and lobelias in the moorland are specifically adapted to the mountain’s intense day/night temperature swings and are a unique photographic highlight.

Major Activities and Importance.

The main reason people visit Kilimanjaro National Park is to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and then reach the summit, Uhuru Peak. There are several official routes to the top, such as Marangu, Machame and Lemosho routes, each offering different levels of difficulty and scenery. The climb usually takes between five to eight days to allow climbers time to adjust to the high altitude. However, the park offers more than just the climb. Visitors can enjoy shorter guided nature walks in the lush forest belt, visit beautiful places like the Shira Plateau, or go bird watching. The mountain and its forest act as a giant water catchment for the region, providing water to millions of people in Tanzania and Kenya, making the park’s protection important not just for nature, but for human life as well. The park also significantly helps the local economy by providing jobs for the guides, porters and then cooks who support the thousands of the hikers each year.
