Kilimanjaro National Park: An ecological world in miniature.

Kilimanjaro National park is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, with all the mountain above the tree line and then six corridors of the forest that extend down the slopes. The mountain’s enormous size and then closeness to the equator crate a unique series of the rapidly changing climatic and then vegetation zones as you ascend. Beginning at the lower slopes, you find cultivated lands, giving you the dense, damp montane rainforest that is a home to the diverse wildlife, including the elusive elephant, leopard, buffalo and then various primates like black and then white colobus monkey. This thick forest acts as an important water catchment area for both Tanzania and Kenya.

Above the montane forest lies the heath and moorland zone, characterized by the vast expanses of giant heather and unique, otherworldly plants like the giant lobelia and groundsel. As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into the harsh, barren alpine desert and finally the arctic zone of the summit. The highest zone, where Gilman’s Poi t is situated is a world of rock, ice and then extreme cold, with little to no plant or the animal life, a stark contrast to the tropical plants far below. The park’s geological features are equally remarkable, with the mountain being composed of three volcanic cones; Shira (the oldest), Mawenzi (the rugged, eroded peak) and Kibo (the youngest on which Gilaman’s point is located). Kibo is considered dormant, not extinct, as evidenced by minor fumaroles and the smell of sulfur within its inner crater.

Gilman’s Point: A Monumental Achievement on Kibo’s Rim.

Gilman’s Point stands at an elevation of approximately 5,685 meters (18,652 feet) on the eastern edge of the Kibo crater rim. It is one of the three official ‘’summit points’’ of the Mount Kilimanjaro, along the Stella Point and then ultimate destination, Uhuru Peak. For climbers using the Marangu, Rongai, or Northern Circuit routes, reaching Gilman’s Point is the culmination of the most challenging part of the entre trek; the relentless, overnight slog up the steep, loose scree slopes of Kibo from the final high-altitude camp.

The final ascent to Gilaman’s Point is a physical and then mental test. Starting around midnight, climbers trek in the dark for about six to eight hours, taking slow, deliberate steps (‘’pole pole,’’ as the guides say) through the loose volcanic gravel. The air is extremely thin, and then the temperatures are often well below freezing. For many the first rays of the sunrise illuminate the signpost at Gilman’s Point, offering a moment of immense relief, triumph, and breathtaking beauty as the sun rise over the vast plains of Africa and then jagged peak of Mawenzi. Reaching this point is such is a significant accomplishment that the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities issue official certificates to those who make it, even if they choose not to continue to Uhuru Peak.

History and Naming of Gilaman’s Point.

The point takes its name from Clement Gillman, an accomplished British railway engineer and pioneering East African geographer. In 1921, Gilman led an expedition whose goal was to conduct geographical and then scientific studies of the mountain. Though he was not the first to map the area (German explorers had done so earlier), Gillman was the first Briton to reach the crater rim after the World War I, a period when the territory shift from German to British control.

During his expedition, Gillman managed to reach this spot on the crater rim, where he planted the Union Jack flag. He also notably used the boiling point of water method to accurately determine the altitude of the mountain. In cognition of his enduring contributions to the exploration and then mapping of Kilimanjaro and East Africa, the location was later named Gilman’s point. While the official sign on the mountain often spells it ‘’Gilman’s,’’ it honors Clement Gillman’s significant legacy.

Upon reaching the crater rim at Gillman’s Point, trekkers are rewarded with two spectacular sights. First, you get a view of the interior of Kibo’s crater, featuring the large Ash Pit and the remaining, beautiful glaciers. This is the powerful reminder of the mountain’s volcanic past. Second, the path a head to the ultimate summit, Uhuru Peak (Freedom Peak) becomes visible.

The trek from Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak is still arduous, taking another one to two hours, but the terrain changes dramatically. It is less steep walk along the relatively flat crater rim, a welcome reprieve after the difficult scree climb. However, the extreme altitude continues to be a severe challenge.
