Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest exceptional, is a magnificent attraction, that is famous for its snowcapped summit but also for the unique vegetation that surrounds its slopes. These ecosystems, range from lush rainforest to high altitude moorland, are a World Heritage Site and important for the entire region.
It was a major world concern when, in late October 2022, when a wildfire broke out on the mountain’s southern side. This event was not the first time the mountain had burned, but its timing and location highlighted the growing threats posed by a changing climate and human activity to this environment.
The fire served as a stark reminder of the continuous conservation efforts needed to protect this wonderful natural wonder.

Timeline and location.
2022 fire began on the evening of Friday, October 21st, on the southern slopes of the mountain. The local residents on the town of Moshi, this is situated at the mountain’s foot, reported seeing a strange glow high up on the mountain’s side. The fire started in moorland zone at an altitude of about 4000 meters (about 13,000 feet) near the Karanga camp. This camp is a common stop for climbers using the very popular Machame and Lemosho routes.
The timing of the fire was critical. Late October is typically the end of the long dry season in Tanzania, meaning the vegetation, meaning the vegetation was at its driest and most flammable state. Compounding this, strong winds high up on the mountain quickly fanned the flames, causing the fire to spread rapidly across the dry, shrubby landscape
For several days, the fire raged, moving westward towards the Barranco Valley and eventually nearing the Umbwe Campsite. Eventually a much-needed change in weather, with some welcome rainfall, greatly assisted in the final containment of the flames.
The unclear cause.
While full, official report on the exact cause of the 2022 fire has been challenging to finalize, the overwhelming consensus among park officials and conservation experts point to human activity as the source of the ignition. It is widely understood that fires on Mount Kilimanjaro, especially outside of the protected forest zone, are almost started by the human carelessness or illegal activity, which is then made much worse by the weather conditions.
Many potential human causes.
Porters or climbers; Accidents related to heating food or a carelessly discharged cigarette stub are a common risk. While official climbing regulations are strict, human error is always a possibility, especially around the high camps where open flames are strictly forbidden.
Honey harvesters and poachers; another significant and then recurring cause of the fires on the mountain is the illegal activity of the local people entering the park. Specifically, hone harvesters often use small fires to crate smoke to drive bees away from their nests. Similarly, poachers might use fire as a means of clearing paths or signaling. Such activities, though small in their starting size, can quickly escape control in the dry environment.
The key factor, however, is not just the ignition source, but the prevailing dry weather conditions. Even if a small, isolated fire is started, the prolonged drought and then dry season, increasingly common due to the world climate change, crate the perfect fuel for the major wildfire. Experts stress that while a human hand may strike the match, it is the exceptionally dry condition of the moorland vegetation that allows it to turn into a raging, uncontrollable inferno.
Environmental and ecological impact.
The ecological damage from the 2022 Kilimanjaro fire was significant, although less extensive than a more devastating fire that occurred in 2020. The fire destroyed just over 34 square kilometers (about 13 square miles) of the mountains delicate natural vegetation.
The fire burned through the unique moorland and heath zone. This area is characterized by slow-growing, highly specialized plant life that is not easily replaced, including;
Giant Groundsels (Dendrosenecio Kilimanjari); these iconic, towering which look like something from a prehistoric world, are unique to this high-altitude zone. They are slow to recover and their loss is a blow to the mountain’s distinct appearance.
Lobelias; another genus of unique rare plans that live in the cold, wet conditions of the moorland.
While the fire did not reach the lower level rainforest, which is a much more effective source of condensation and then water catchment for the region, the destruction of the moorland has long-term consequences. The loss of vegetation can lead to increased soil erosion, especially on the mountain’s steep slopes, where the plant roots are essential for holding the soil in place.

Furthermore, these recurrent fires interrupt the natural regeneration cycle of the ecosystem. Many of the affected plants take decades, or even many years, to grow back to their full size and then ecological function. Each fire forces the regeneration process to restart from scratch, essentially lowering the forest line and then changing the overall composition and structure of the mountain’s unique habitats. This continuous damage to the natural habitat also threatens the various bird species and then smaller mammals that call the moorland home.
